None of this is directly intended to cause offense, neither does it necessarily serve to be an accurate indication of service levels or the qualities of the organizations involved, Moreover, as you will notice, some no longer exist. Instead they were likely created at moments of creativity or by way of a travellers frustrated expression to have a laugh.

Some of these acronyms or more precisely 'backronyms' and can be potentially offensive, so if you are very easily offended, then this is not a recommended read.

Why is Airline food such an anti-climax?

Image
In the event you are reading this article and share the view that airline food seems to always be bland and completely tasteless, new research demonstrates that the specific type noise which fills the cabin air actually affects our taste buds. The impact is to reduce our sensitivity to salty/savory and sweet food.
Interestingly NASA supplies its astronauts with strong foods, due to the fact that whilst in flight they are not able to sense the taste of food in the same way as on planet earth. The answer again leads to this special kind of noise.
The actual research experiment conducted by the journal Food Quality and preferences featured 48 blind-folded volunteers, which were fed salty food like ordinary crisps in addition to sweet foods such as biscuits, whilst they listened to silence or a special noise through headphones.
Each volunteer was tasked to rate the each food sampled for flavor and enjoyment.
The overriding conclusion was that the evidence points to this effect being down…

Aegean Airlines go on the offensive for Cabin Baggage money

Image
In 2013 Aegean Airlines won the prestigious Skytrax Award for "Best Regional Airline in Europe" for the third consecutive year.

In a passionate acceptance speech the President 'Theodore Vassilakis' dedicated the award to his employees stating that "each in his/her own way contributed to achieving this high goal".

Personally speaking Aeagean Airlines has always been a pleasure to travel with, as they take care of the small details with a certain youthful style.

The Aegean Airlines website is well designed too and now even features a low cost calendar to select the cheapest dates to travel. The Air Hostesses must also win the award for being the the most young and beautiful with their slick cut uniforms and extremely elegant, polite manner.

All of this is in stark contrast to an ever decreasing level of poor in flight services offered by most European Airlines.

Alas, now in 2014 is seems that Aegean Airlines have caught the annoying disease of pestering…

World travel can make anyone sick

Image
World travel can make anyone sick, but Swiss researchers found that men and women tend to suffer different illnesses. Women, says the research, are more prone to stomach problems and men are at higher risk of fevers and sexually transmitted diseases.

A study of almost 59000 international travelers by the University of Zurich found women were more likely than men to come down with bouts of diarrhea or other gastrointestinal problems, colds, urinary tract infections and adverse reactions to medications, such as those taken to prevent malaria.

Men had higher risks of fever, including from infections transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks or other such vectors, such as malaria, dengue and rickettsia.

Men are also more likely than women to be treated for mountain sickness, frostbite or sexually transmitted diseases.

Researcher Dr. Patricia Schlagenhauf said the findings, published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, offer travelers and travel-medicine specialists a clearer idea of how …

Ryanair to move Copenhagen-based aircraft

Image
"Ryanair will move its one Copenhagen-based aircraft out of the country following a court ruling that airport staff in the Danish capital had the right to refuse to service its flights, the Irish airline said on Friday.

Europe’s largest low-cost airline’s policy of employing people in countries such as Denmark under the less generous terms of Ireland, rather than local rules, has incurred the anger of Danish labour unions.

The unions demanded that Ryanair sign a Danish collective agreement with its locally-based pilots and cabin crew.

A Danish court ruled on Wednesday that the unions had the right to demand a collective agreement for Ryanair staff and also to stage a strike against the airline.

Ryanair are continuing to operate routes to and from Copenhagen on aircraft based outside of Denmark and said on Friday that it would increase its number of routes to 14 from 12."

Nightmare experience with Ethiopian Airlines - what happened to the new spirit of Africa?

Image
The below letter was written by a Perpetual Traveller reader who wanted to share his alarming experience with Ethiopian airlines.
------------------------------------------
This is to share my horrific travel experience with Ethiopian airlines from 6th (China) and back on 12th
I reached the airport on 6th Jan. The girl there said that, I can stay at the airport but I told her that I want to go back as I live nearby, but she tried to explain that it is not possible, when I insisted finally they let me go out from airport and asked me to report at 12 noon as flight will depart around 14:00.
I told to that counter executive that I am frequent flyer of Singapore airlines, which in Star Alliance, but she refused to insert my number or accept my Turkish airline number. According to her Singapore airlines is not star alliance member!

I boarded the plane on time around 14:00 hrs and saw a Ethiopian lady sitting on my assigned seat and
she didn’t want to move. I called the air hostess and t…

Ryanair named second-worst brand in the WORLD for customer service

Image
Ryanair named second-worst brand in the WORLD for customer service, but AXA insurance comes top of the poll.

Simplicity index ranks brands for products, services, interactions and communications.

Despite recent efforts to transform its reputation, the budget airline was one of the worst-performing brands overall in Siegel+Gale's 2014 simplicity index.

In a survey of over 12,000 customers in eight countries, Ryanair was named the second worst-ranked brand, based on ease of customer use of a company's products, services, interactions and communications

Primary customer complaints against the airline were Ryanair's badly designed website and poor customer service that 'leaves the onus on the customer.'

The airline's app was also named a major cause for headaches, with many having difficulty in downloading mobile boarding passes.

'The pricing is far too complicated and isn’t put forward honestly,' one respondent said of the airline. 'There’s so many v…

Ryanair is transforming into a super family-friendly airline

Image
What an amazing turnaround for the once nickle and dime airline that used to treat its passengers as people to fleece, and even considered to charge for toilet visits. If you have never been on a Ryanair flight before, then read the below article to get a taste of the former experience.

Daring to fly with Ryanair

Ryanair issued 2 profit warnings in the past year, blaming the impact of:
The strong pound High fuel costs Increased competition They claim these factors forced the airline to cut fares, however there was no mention publicly of the poor passenger experience.

The penny has now dropped and things are now set to change as a result of Ryanair's "Always Getting Better programme" which pledges a commitment to the continued improvement of the customer experience.

The first interesting measure is the "Ryanair Family Extra", which offers families a range of discounts and an improved service for people travelling with children.

2014 the year of airline accidents and incidents, but what about the Air France Air Safety record closer to home?

Image
2014 was an dramatic year where airline accident and incidents was concerned. We can all recall the 2 major Malaysian Airlines incidents which dominated the media and generated much conspiracy. Just before the end of the year Air Asia experienced it's first ever major accident.

At PT, we would like to remind our readers if they are considering never to fly on an Aisan Airline again that some of our European National Carriers do not have great records either, in particular Air France.

The cold reality is frightening to say the least for flight AF447 whereby 228 people died somewhere in the Atlantic, For the Perpetual Travellers amongst us, especially those that have frequented this route on previous occasions, this situation is most alarming. A number of concerning Air accidents have occurred on a worldwide scale and it has come to the point when one needs to check the safety record of an airline before committing to fly with them.

So while on the topic, what of the Air France’s…

Daring to fly with Ryanair!

Image
Inappropriately dressed in a suit coming straight from a management training session onboard a cruise ship, I threw caution to the wind and embarked on a courageous Ryanair flight from a miserably equipped Palermo Airport (especially in the non Schengen area), which is far from the busy town center and takes over an hour's drive during peak time.

It would be true to say however, that the route and time of my flight was convenient and as such my Corporate travel team rightly presented it as the best option.

It soon dawned on me however that in essence Ryanair is an acronym...

R - Rushed Y - Yellow A - Annoying N - No Sanitation A - Animal-like I - Irritating R - Rip Off
Let's take a look at the detail...

RUSHED
The moment that there was the slightest stirring of the inadequate embarking counter a rush or more like stampede occurred of people jostling for position in a human fragmented line. From my perspective the flight did not appear to be full, so it was difficult to…

easyJet reduces guaranteed cabin luggage towards the size of a handbag

Image
Travellers are slowly coming to terms with the unfortunate reality that most European airlines are quietly raising their fees for checked-in baggage. In many respects this gradual move is like a stealth tax on travel and there is no sign of it getting better anytime soon.

The latest negative development comes from easyJet in the form of a new even smaller size of guaranteed in-cabin baggage, making them the strictest low-cost airline when it comes to luggage size.

easyJet's new measures for reducing baggage size were first quietly implemented in July 2013. Basically, the greatest size number which a traveller is assured to be able to carry his bag on board has been diminished from:

56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm
to
50 cm x 40 cm x 20cms

If you have not yet seen the new size, we recommend for a laugh that you take a look at the incredibly small cases that are now being made in line with the move by easyJet. There is just enough room for a pair of of light trousers, a shirt, 1 set of un…

Cheap flights and their principles - Why are they so cheap?

Image
There are several low cost airlines around the world. However, all differ in their service and what they offer but many of them are following specific principles in order to lower their costs and gain money.

For all those wondering why some airlines are cheaper than others, we present you some of their key principles and we explain how do they manage to offer cheap flight tickets to travelers.
Standardized fleet: This might include lower training, lower maintenance costs, purchasing many aircrafts in order to achieve a discount. Another key principle is to keep only the essential features. Some of these might be reclining seats, pilot auto-throttle and frequent flyer schemes. They prefer to use secondary airports that cost less, in order to decrease their landing fees. Many low-cost airlines prefer to have many flights per day in order to be as less time on the ground as possible and pay lower airport charges. They also achieve to reduce their costs by not having calling centers and…

American Airlines and US Airways Joined Forces

Image
American Airlines and US Airways Group joined forces shaping world's largest airline despite the US Government contrast to approve merging. American government argued that unification of both companies will result to stifled competition and increase in the price of air fares.

Both airlines agreed to relinquish at least 50 paired take offs and landing slots at Virginia's Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and 17 more at LaGuardia Airport in New York. Both carriers own the 69% of Reagan National slot, however once the slots arrangement is implemented this share will reduced to approximately 57%, while both airlines have requested to make slots available to other carriers at airports in Dallas, Boston, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles.

US Airways CEO Doug Parker supports that the latest developments will not affect the company's ability to fly and describes merger as a great growth opportunity.

As a combined force, both companies will operate around 6,700 flights a day…
